The Brussels Throwdown

This weekend the Brussels Throwdown is going down.

After 3 qualifying WODs, Tina Tursic, Sarah Troglia and Andy Orsinger managed to qualify themselves for the Finals in Brussels (06.09.14-07.04.14), all landing in the top 20.

In July Tina competed in the French Throwdown in Paris where she learnt a lot about her strengths and weaknesses as an athlete. She said: "It was the first big competition for me, so it was a really memorable experience. The event was on a very high level, programming was excellent and so were all the comepetitors. My favorite event was the WOD 4 (350m swim, 500m run, 1000m row, 400m run) and the least favorite WOD 3, as my ring dips were just not there. But overall, a really good experience and I am looking forward to next competitions."
After the French Throwdown, she changed her programming from the "She" OPT blog to a personalized program, put together by her coach. The focus in the last few weeks were on strength, mostly on upper body with a lot of bodybuilding aspects, getting stronger arms.

Sarah has been going crazy with her squats in the last couple of months, front- and backsquatting multiple times a week. A couple of weeks before the Brussels Throwdown she kicked up the short metcons and optimized her muscle-ups, which have been looking really solid lately. She's been eating Paleo for 3 months now, allowing herself some more carbs here and there like potatoes or rice. In Brussels, she's hoping for Burpees, box jumps, power cleans and handstand push-ups (nobody does these faster than she does).

Andy has been focusing mainly on his lifting. In Spring and in the Summer he went through a couple of weightlifting and bodybuilding programs, trying to get his strength and muscle gain up, while staying explosive.
He's hoping for some heavy lifting in Brussels, preferably squat cleans mixed with pull-ups and shoulder to overhead. He hasn't explicitely been preparing for this competition and fell sick last week. 2 days before the competition he got his blood checked and the doctor said it was fine to compete, so let's hope for the best. His nutrition will be what he knows he can digest well, like rice and meat.... and his secret weapon Kinder Buenos. Andreas Toscan has been helping him out a lot with questions regarding training and nutrition (maybe not so much on the Kinder Buenos).

Titus... che boludo

Our coach and competition team member Titus Thut has been in South America since last autumn. Coaching Crossfit and learning the language in Honduras, Costa Rica and right now in Argentina. He's been coaching and training at BIGG Crossfit in Buenos Aires for a couple of months now and also did the Opens there, placing 9th in the Latin America Region. With such a great performance, he could have gone individual at the Latin America Regionals in Santiago, Chile. But he decided to compete in a Team for his box.

His training ethic quickly inspired his fellow team members from Crossfit BIGG to train harder for the upcoming Regionals. Shortly before the Regionals, one of their team members injured his elbow and had to drop out. Another athlete had to replace the spot. Nevertheless, the team put out an incredible show with a crazy support group. As everybody expected, Titus put the work in and showed everybody that he's one of the fittest people in Latin America.

It all came down to the last workout of the weekend. With only one point difference, Titus' team went head to head against another team. The winner of the workout would decide which Team would be able to go to the Crossfit Games in Carson, California in July. It was a real nail-biter..... Check it out for yourself:

Amazingly enough, BIGG Crossfit won the workout and qualified for the Games. So Titus will be going to the Crossfit Games, the World Championships of Fitness. A huuuge congratulations to our buddy Titus. We will be watching you on ESPN this summer!

European Regionals 2014

On the comming weekend (16.5.-18.5.14), Europe's finest Crossfitters will be throwing down in Copenhagen, Denmark. The best 48 guys, best 48 girls and best 30 Teams out of the Opens get to compete at the Regionals, which are essentially the European Championships of Crossfit. One of these fittest 48 men in Europe is our man Lukas Esslinger.

His 44th place as a rookie in the 2012 European Regionals showed his potential in this sport. He was hungry for more. He packed his bags and spent a semester abroad in San Diego, training at Crossfit Invictus and also joining their team to compete in the SOCAL (South California) Regionals in 2013.

This year he will be competing as individual. His 14th place finish in the Opens 2014 was a statement to the European Crossfit scene that he's back and ready to show what gains he's made since 2012.

An entourage of the Crossfit Zurich box will be supporting him in Copenhagen. Be sure to wish him good luck and give him a butt-slap at the box before he leaves on Thursday morning.

Another Swiss athlete that qualified, is Lukas' training buddy and burpee-phenomenon Jonas Müller from Crossfit Turicum. They've been training hard together multiple times a day every day (all day err' day) for a couple of weeks, pushing eachother to get into the shape needed for the prestigious and ruthless Regionals. The third Swiss athlete is the humble old hand Mareck Bigler, owner of Crossfit Riviera.
